Upgrading to Vista - Lost and Gain

A couple of weeks ago, I upgraded both computers at home to Windows Vista. After evaluating it for some time. I think it is the right moment to make some comment.

One of the two most important issues that people have been complaining about Vista is the performance. Many users report that you cannot get satisfy performance unless you have 2Gb of memory.

See the screen dump. With 2Gb of memory and 3GHz CPU. The Windows Experience Index (WEI) for CPU is 4.2, and memory is 5.0. It can still meet the pass mark 4.0. My Radeon X700 display card also gives a WEI 4.0. As my computer is almost 2 years old. I don't think Vista is very resource thirsty.

To me the greatest problem with Vista is the support on older hardware and application software. As I installed devices drivers for all peripherals. I found my old Logitech Webcam is no longer supported by Vista. Luckily it is the only hardware need to retire.
On the software side, there are more titles I need to sacrifices. My video edit program is no longer working properly. And my OEM Nero 6 comes with my DVD burner gave me many error popup. I need to find replacement on this items. Although Vista itself also provides DVD burning and video editing application, but they are not as usable as the software I used to be using.

Go back to the bright side, the new interface look nice, though Microsoft have changed the position of frequently used shortcuts like "My Computer" and "My Document". It took me some time to get used to the new arrangement, but I have no hard feeling on that.

The best thing I like is the tablet PC support. As the new characters hand writing input is much better than the former version. I can write Chinese and Japanese with my Wacom tablet.
