Firefox 2.0 Vs IE 7
Both IE and Firefox have roll out a major new version in the same month. Although I'm a Microsoft hater, I still installed IE 7 to my workstation at once. When I launch it, the first idea I had was: "Hey, where's the menu!". After I managed to found it. I found that the new version is just a feature catch up against Firefox. I think it is just a response to some news reported that the user base of Firefox is growing quite significantly. Most new feature in IE 7 are already exist in Firefox 1.5 or 2.
Today I got Firefox upgraded. The look and feel is quite the same as the old version. The main reason is most of the add-on and themes I've been using with version 1.5.x is still working with 2.0. Quickly I decided I should keep on using Firefox as my primary browser. Not only because my subjective feeling on Microsoft, but also the spell check feature of Firefox really sells itself.
So I'm glad to see that the feature race of browser starts again. Besides that, the other important thing is still the race of user base. As Firefox now leading the feature race slightly, only 12% to 15% of user are using it. So there's still a long way to go in the marketing war. To Firefox, I think the next challenge is how to fight the marketing war against M$ and keeping the lead in terms of function and feature at the same time. And that'll cost a lot of money. The problem is it is easy to win geek users like me with better feature, stability and security, but these factors cannot win causal users, which is the majority. I think now on Firefox need some new feature to attract these user. Not just increase usability, but also introduce new possibility and more fun to use. So let see what will be the next big thing.
